Florian Seidl, in collaboration with Angelica Rella, designed the Lavazza Idola to be a perfect solution for coffee lovers. The machine's touch interface with acoustic feedback offers four selections and a temperature boost, providing a tailor-made experience for every taste or occasion. The machine also alerts users when water is missing, the caps container is full, or descaling is necessary. The adjustable drip tray adds to the convenience of the design.
The Lavazza Idola's unique properties lie in its sophisticated detailing and quality surfacing. The design, with its open spirit, is an evolution of Lavazza’s established form language. The main shell's shoulder profile lowers the product's perceived height, contributing to its sleek and modern aesthetic.
The coffee machine was realized using injection molding (ABS/SAN), glass, and a steel grid, with a painted main shell. The technical specifications of the design are 145mm x 380mm x 280mm, and it weighs 4 kg. It's an intuitive touch interface with acoustic feedback ensures quiet operation.
The Lavazza Idola was designed in Turin, Italy, following a process of conceptual and formal research, 3D modeling, mock-ups, and prototyping. A significant challenge was developing a shared common platform for two machines, Idola and Deséa, simultaneously. However, the design team successfully overcame this hurdle, resulting in a product that offers a proper Italian espresso experience at home.
The Lavazza Idola's exceptional design and innovation earned it the Platinum A' Home Appliances Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal wellbeing, and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
